Afghanistan Reconstruction
- Four years after the ouster of the fundamentalist regime, billions of dollars in aid has refurbished hospitals, and rebuilt schools and roads. The
AFTIG team have compiled a five-year blueprint to meet the demands of its people for a better life after a quarter century of war.
-
- Construction
- Development must be housed somewhere.
Yet in Afghanistan, solid, modern
homes and businesses are few and far between. The development of an updated
construction industry in Afghanistan would have a positive affect not only
on the economy and on the business sectors in the country, but would also
profoundly affect the average citizen?s quality of life.
War has wreaked havoc with the landscape in Afghanistan?and the scars are
still evident in the broken dams, ruined farms, and demolished business and
residential areas. In order for Afghanistan to rebuild and rejuvenate its
economy, there must be a place for business to be reborn, and roads that
provide the way to the future. Therefore, the physical infrastructure of the
country must be re-imagined and rebuilt, one brick at a time.
The aid community has responded to the country?s need?particularly the need
for new and better roads. A tremendous effort has been made to reconnect
villages and towns with rural and district roads, and to rebuild a major
portion of the Kabul-Kandahar-Herat Highway. In addition, every business and
every market needs a new, safe, and technologically-advanced place to grow.
Education will never improve without safe schools. Afghanistan?s energy
market needs new advanced power plants and dams to reach their goals.
Healthcare requires hospitals, clinics, and offices with the space and
technology to treat more patients more efficiently.
Outside investment will only strengthen this growing industry. An
investment
in Afghanistan?s reconstruction would help cover the cost of many layers to
a construction effort. In addition to the actual building costs, materials
must be purchased?concrete, steel, and heavy equipment. Large-scale
construction requires intense planning and know-how from leaders in the
architectural and design fields. An investment in construction would also
provide the revenue to promote building projects and would create employment
opportunities for citizens who want a hands-on part in their country?s
reconstruction.
Finally, Afghanistan hopes not only to develop, but to improve using the
newest technologies and environmental knowledge available. Green
technologies and environmentally-friendly materials and practices will allow
the country to participate in the new global awareness of our effect on the
land we love.
With safe and sound construction on the outside, Afghanistan can begin to
recover on the inside.
